Bringing a baby into the world is a joyous event. But the threat of infant abduction is still a very real one.

A report by The Times of India found that a newborn boy was abducted from Thane Civil Hospital around 3 am on Sunday, January 14, 2018 barely four hours after his birth.

Deputy commissioner of police D Swami said that CCTV cameras had captured the child-lifter—a woman in a pink saree, who was assisted by a 12-year-old girl and a man. The three who were waiting patiently at the hospital bundled up the baby and hurriedly spirited him away. The three can be seen walking out of the hospital towards the railway station.

The hospital authorities claimed that they have three security guards—two were on duty while the third was on leave. The incident took place when the newborn’s father and grandmother stepped out for a cup of tea. The baby’s mother, Mohini Bhovar (19), was alone when the abductor woman walked into the room.

“I was awake when the woman walked up to my bed and said she was an employee of the hospital,” said Bhovar. “She took the baby from my arms, saying that my mother was sitting outside and had asked her to fetch the baby.”

Bhovar, who was inconsolable, said she learnt much later that her mother and husband were out for tea.

Bhovar, who hails from a tribal family in Bhiwandi, had got admitted to the hospital on Saturday evening and delivered the child around 10.30pm. The mother and the newborn were then wheeled into the room for the night.

A complaint has been lodged at the Thane Nagar police station.

Additional civil surgeon, at the hospital, Dr. Sangita Makode, said that they had requested for around 50 security guards. “Around four months ago, we gave an application to the deputy director of health services. We hope it will be sanctioned soon,” said Dr. Makode.

It takes as little as 4 seconds for an abductor to leave a room with a baby and make an exit.
