Digital copy machines pose a serious data security risk as most companies fail to delete thousands of copies stored on the copier’s hard drive before returning hired machines or selling them. According to a CBS report shown above, nearly every copier built since 2002 contains a hard drive storing an image of every document copied, scanned or emailed by the machine. Investigations found that this data usually still stored on the hard drive when the machines were resold, creating a potential digital data time bomb.

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) in the USA works to help prevent child abduction and sexual exploitation; help find missing children; and assist victims of child abduction and sexual exploitation, their families, and the professionals who serve them.

NCMEC now distributes missing child posters faster using the ADAM system, a service of ChoicePoint that uses RightFax. Adam is a service enabling NCMEC to electronically submit and automatically send posters to recipients. ADAM examines the Oracle database for all possible recipients and selects those within a designated mile radius. Using RightFax and the RightFax Oracle Integration Module that fax-enables the database, ADAM automatically transmits the data and photo of the missing child to targeted recipients without any additional human intervention.

The other day, my 7+ year old daughter, Kavya came up to me and asked me about different methods of communication. She is in Grade I right now and this was part of the school project that they were doing. As is the case always, I fired up my lap top and googled up. I wanted her to be different so taught her about smoke signals, tin can string phone, fax and SMS. While the first two were relatively simple using pictures, I could actually demonstrate SMS between two phones. Then realised that by just saying fax she would not understand a thing. So went to youtube (Gosh what would we do in life without Google and it’s search service) and found this interesting video. While this was just the first part, it did explain to her how fax originated and fax communication happened. The full 24 minute video can be found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaCfs5Xb-EI
